SVOLT, Tsinghua University, Team up to Design Safe Batteries

BAODING, CHINA/BEIJING, July 22, 2019-SVOLT Energy Technology Co. Ltd and Battery Safety Laboratory of Tsinghua University, led by Professor Ouyang Minggao, held a signing ceremony of cooperation agreement, announcing that the two sides would conduct in-depth collaborative research on the early warning and management system to deal with the thermal runaway of batteries. This collaboration aims to provide effective solutions to the two problems that have long plagued the industry, thermal runaway of batteries and thermal propagation of systems, thus improving the safety of electric vehicles.

At the signing ceremony, Chairman Wei Jianjun introduced the strategic planning of the Great Wall Motors and the development of SVOLTto Professor Ouyang Minggao’s delegation. Wei also said that they would make the most of geographical advantages, and hope to build deep ties with high-profile universities and colleges like Tsinghua, creating greater value for the development of the industry.

Professor Ouyang Minggao spoke highly of the strategic planning of Great Wall Motors and its long-term heavy investment in R&D. He said that the areas that SVOLT has been committed to are highly consistent with the planning of the Battery Safety Laboratory of Tsinghua University.He also had high expectations on this collaboration, and hoped that the technical ideas of the university would match the advanced and complete R&D conditions of SVOLT, tohelp solve battery safety problems efficiently.

Yang Hongxin, General Manager of SVOLT, and Lu Languang, principal engineer of the Battery Safety Laboratory and associate research fellow at Tsinghua University, signed a cooperation agreement on behalf of each of the parties.

According to the agreement, SVOLTand Tsinghua University will conduct in-depth collaborative research on the early warning and management of thermal runaway, including:

w   The early warning technology to solve the thermal runaway of batteries. This technology is capable of monitoring and, in view of the self-initiated internal short circuit, of detecting potential risks and giving an alarm signal before thermal runaway occurs;

w   Thermal runaway test, evaluation and suppression technology for single cells. The thermal runaway mechanism of batteries will be studied based on material reaction dynamics, to improve the design of materials, thus helping solve the thermal runaway.

w  Suppression of thermal propagation on the systematic level. The hazardous areas caused by thermal runaway of cells can be limited to a certain range, through the battery’s module design.

w  Safe fast-charging technology. Research on the control of and detection of lithium plating will be conducted, according to the lithium plating/intercalation dynamics on the anode.

Battery Safety Laboratory at Tsinghua University

Founded in 2006 by Mr. Ouyang Minggao, fellow of Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Battery Safety Laboratory at Tsinghua University now has 7 senior technical researchers, 8 intermediate technical researchers, 18 doctoral students and 14 master’s students.Committed to research on the thermal safety technology of the battery system of new energy vehicles, the laboratory now has a complete set of equipment for battery characteristics test, thermal safety analysis and battery simulation. Tsinghua University has four major technologies to prevent and control thermal runaway: 1. thermal runaway test, evaluation and suppressiontechnology for single cells; 2. safe fast-charging technology; 3. early warning technology for thermal runaway; 4. simulation and suppression technology for thermal propagation.
